Conquering IBS
We are
living amidst an epidemic of digestive problems and as April is
International IBS awareness month I thought it made sense this month
to focus on IBS and digestive health.
So what
exactly is IBS and why is it so common?
IBS is
an umbrella term used for a collection of chronic digestive
disorders characterised by abdominal pain and / or discomfort and a
change in bowel frequency and / or form. The diagnosis of IBS is
usually made by excluding more serious conditions such as
inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease and gastrointestinal
cancers.
The
symptoms of IBS can vary quite a bit and as a result researchers
have classified IBS sufferers into three groups. IBS C - relates to
the group of individuals who suffer mainly from constipation, IBS D
- describes individuals who have mainly diarrhoea and IBS A -
categorises individuals who alternate between diarrhoea and
constipation.

So far
so good, but what causes this diverse array of symptoms? Well just
as each individual appears to have a different set of IBS issues, so
the causes vary from person to person. Very often sufferers have an
imbalance of bacteria in the gut, possibly an overgrowth of the
yeast candida albicans or a parasitic infection.
Food intolerances are commonly a problem as are difficulties
digesting key food groups such as proteins, fats and carbohydrates.
Stress although not always the underlying cause can create gut
inflammation, lowers gut immunity and makes it more difficult more
to digest food properly.
At The
Nutrition Link we recommend testing to identify underlying causes,
avoidance of problematic foods and tailored supplements to support
digestion, soothe the gastrointestinal tract and to remove unwanted
bacteria, parasites and yeast.

Here's what some of our client's have to say about The Nutrition Link's approach to IBS
'My bloating has completely disappeared and my bowel movements have gone back to normal' Claire, Watford.
' How fantastic to be pain free! I had no idea I
